At a glance
This ten-day sample follows Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella and Galle. Confirm a train segment separately, and leave the road transfers room of their own in the itinerary.
Day by day
Airport → Sigiriya → Kandy → Ella → Galle → Airport
Arrival and a gentle start
Plan around the landing time rather than an assumed first-day outing. Choose a nearby overnight for a late flight, or agree a comfortable onward transfer with a break.
Sigiriya and nearby culture
Choose Sigiriya or an appropriate alternative around your comfort with steps and heat. Add one nearby cultural visit only if it leaves time to enjoy both.
Another cultural day
Use your second full day for one selected Cultural Triangle visit, or stay closer to your base. The extra night gives you a choice, not an obligation to see every site.
To Kandy
Travel to your Kandy base with time for breaks and the final hotel approach. Keep the arrival evening flexible instead of booking an activity against an uncertain road time.
A full Kandy day
Choose a cultural visit, time by the lake or another agreed outing. Review worship and visitor arrangements, and leave space for a meal rather than a full-day checklist.
Into the hills
Travel towards Ella by the agreed road route, or use a separately confirmed rail segment. Include station transport, bags and time to settle at the next stay.
Ella at your pace
Choose a suitable walk or viewpoint around your group and the weather. Leave another option for a wet morning and some time to enjoy being in the hills.
Down to the south
Allow a proper transfer day from the hill country towards Galle. If a safari matters, revise the route to give the wildlife base its own overnight.
Fort streets or coast
Spend the day in the way that suits your base: a fort walk, a meal, coastal time or rest. Ask locally about current beach conditions before choosing water activities.
Return for departure
Confirm the exact airport and flight time, then work backwards through check-in, the road journey and a suitable buffer. Review pickup arrangements the day before.

Make each full day count
Choose the visit or experience you most want in each base. Leave a little open time for weather, a slower meal or a place you decide to linger.
Decide whether rail belongs in your trip
A train journey can be part of the experience when the service and seats work. Keep a road alternative until the reservation and station connections are confirmed.

Make northern travel a deliberate choice
If Jaffna is your main interest, replace part of this loop or allow more nights. It deserves a northern chapter rather than an additional long drive.
